Every important NCERT line, then what it really means in plain language. If a friend asked "but what does that mean?", this is the answer you would give.

🌱 1.1 · What is "living"?
The book starts by asking: how do we know something is alive?
Look around β€” a dog, a mango tree, a stone, a car. Some things are alive, some are not. But what exactly is the difference? The chapter hunts for a test of aliveness: a property that ALL living things have and NO non-living thing has. Such a property is called a defining feature.
"All living organisms grow. Increase in mass and increase in number of individuals are twin characteristics of growth."
Living things get bigger (more mass) and become more in number (one cell becomes two, a family of mice becomes many mice). These two together are what biology calls growth.
"Non-living objects also grow if we take increase in body mass as a criterion. Mountains, boulders and sand mounds do grow."
Here is the problem: a sand pile also "grows" when wind keeps dropping more sand on top. But that growth is just material sticking on the outside (accretion). A plant grows from the inside β€” its own cells divide. Because non-living things can fake it, growth alone cannot be the test of life.
"Reproduction, likewise, cannot be an all-inclusive defining characteristic of living organisms."
You would think "making babies" proves something is alive. But mules (horse Γ— donkey), sterile worker bees and some human couples cannot reproduce β€” yet they are 100% alive. If truly living things exist that never reproduce, reproduction cannot be the test either.
"Metabolism: The sum total of all the chemical reactions occurring in our body is metabolism. No non-living object exhibits metabolism."
Inside every living cell, thousands of tiny chemical reactions run non-stop β€” food is broken, new parts are built. This total chemistry is metabolism, and no stone, no car, no river has it. So metabolism IS a defining feature of life. βœ…
"Metabolic reactions can be demonstrated outside the body in cell-free systems... they are living reactions but not living objects."
Scientists can make a body-reaction happen in a test tube (in vitro). Careful with the wording NEET loves: that reaction in a tube is a living reaction, but the test tube contents are not a living object. Both surely alive β‰  both surely living things.
"Cellular organisation of the body is the defining feature of life forms."
Every living thing is made of cells β€” one cell or trillions. Nothing non-living is built of cells. Second defining feature. βœ…
"Consciousness... all organisms are aware of their surroundings and respond to environmental stimuli. It is the defining property of living organisms."
Poke anything alive and it reacts β€” plants bend towards light, animals run from danger, bacteria swim towards food. This awareness-and-response is consciousness, and the NCERT calls it the defining property. Humans go one step further: we are aware of ourselves β€” self-consciousness.

The chapter's one-sentence summary of life: living things copy themselves, change over generations, keep their insides balanced, and answer back when the world pokes them. Properties of life emerge from interactions of molecules and organs β€” a heart alone is not alive the way a whole body is.
🏷️ 1.2 · Diversity and the need for names
"The number of species that are known and described ranges between 1.7 – 1.8 million."
Scientists have found and written down about 1.7 to 1.8 million different kinds of living things β€” and more are found every year. This richness of kinds is biodiversity.
"Local names would vary from place to place, even within a country."
The same bird has one name in Tamil, another in Hindi, another in English. With millions of species and thousands of languages, chaos! So science gives each organism one official name used worldwide β€” the scientific name.
"Each name has two components β€” the Generic name and the specific epithet. This system is called Binomial nomenclature, given by Carolus Linnaeus."
Every scientific name has exactly two parts: first the genus (like a surname shared by close relatives), then the specific epithet (the personal name). Mangifera indica = mango. The two-name system is binomial nomenclature, invented by Linnaeus.
The four writing rules (universal practice):
1. Names are in Latin (or latinised), written in italics in print. 2. The genus starts with a capital letter, the specific epithet with a small letter (Mangifera indica). 3. When handwritten, underline the two words separately β€” the underline replaces italics. 4. The author's name is added at the end in short form: Mangifera indica Linn. β€” meaning Linnaeus first described it.
Plant names follow the ICBN; animal names follow the ICZN.
Two international rule-books make sure no two organisms share a name: ICBN (International Code for Botanical Nomenclature) for plants, ICZN (Zoological) for animals. Agreed names are accepted worldwide, and each name is used only once.
"Taxonomy: characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature are the processes basic to taxonomy."
Taxonomy is the science of sorting life, in four steps: study the organism's features (characterisation) β†’ work out what it is (identification) β†’ put it in its group (classification) β†’ give it its correct name (nomenclature). Grouping into convenient categories uses easily observable characters; the groups are called taxa.
"Systematics takes into account evolutionary relationships between organisms. The word comes from the Latin 'systema' β€” Linnaeus wrote Systema Naturae."
Systematics = taxonomy plus family history: it also asks "who evolved from whom, who is whose cousin". The name honours Linnaeus's famous book Systema Naturae.
πŸͺœ 1.3 Β· Taxonomic categories β€” the ladder
"Classification involves a hierarchy of steps in which each step represents a rank or category... All categories together constitute the taxonomic hierarchy. Each category is a unit of classification, called a taxon."
Sorting life works like address lines β€” house, street, city, state, country. Biology's address ladder has seven rungs: Species β†’ Genus β†’ Family β†’ Order β†’ Class β†’ Phylum (animals) / Division (plants) β†’ Kingdom. Each rung is a category; the actual group sitting on a rung (say, "Mammalia") is a taxon.
"Species: a group of individual organisms with fundamental similarities."
The bottom rung, the real thing you can point at. All organisms that are basically the same kind β€” able to look alike and breed together β€” are one species. In Panthera leo (lion), the word leo is the specific epithet; Panthera is the genus.
"Genus comprises a group of related species."
Close cousin species share a genus. Lion (Panthera leo), tiger (Panthera tigris) and leopard (Panthera pardus) are all Panthera. Potato, tomato and brinjal (makhana family of vegetables!) are all species of Solanum.
"Family has a group of related genera... Solanaceae contains Solanum, Petunia and Datura. The cat family is Felidae."
Related genera bundle into a family, grouped mainly on vegetative and reproductive (flower) features in plants. Solanum + Petunia + Datura β†’ family Solanaceae. Cats: genus Panthera (lions, tigers) + genus Felis (house cats) β†’ family Felidae.
"Order is the assemblage of families with a few similar characters. Families Convolvulaceae and Solanaceae fall under Polymoniales, based mainly on floral characters. Felidae and Canidae are in order Carnivora."
Families with some resemblance join into an order. Cat family (Felidae) + dog family (Canidae) = order Carnivora β€” the meat-eaters. The plant example: Convolvulaceae + Solanaceae β†’ order Polymoniales, grouped on flower characters.
"Related orders form a class: order Primata (monkeys, gorilla, gibbon) plus Carnivora are in class Mammalia."
Orders club into a class. Monkey-kind (Primata) and meat-eaters (Carnivora) both feed babies milk β†’ class Mammalia.
"Classes comprising animals like fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals constitute the phylum Chordata β€” they share a notochord and a dorsal hollow neural system. In plants, the comparable category is Division."
Classes join into a phylum. Fish + frogs + snakes + birds + mammals all have a rod along the back (notochord) and a hollow nerve tube on the back side β†’ phylum Chordata. Plants use the word Division instead of phylum (flowering plants = Angiospermae).
"All animals are in kingdom Animalia; all plants in kingdom Plantae. As we go higher, the number of common characteristics goes on decreasing."
The top rung. And the most-tested line of the chapter: climb UP the ladder β†’ members share FEWER features and problems of classification INCREASE; climb DOWN β†’ members are more and more similar. Two lions (species) are near-twins; two chordates (a fish and you) share only a notochord's worth of family resemblance.

S1 Β· The two-question filter for "defining feature".

Ask: can any non-living thing imitate it? Can any living thing lack it? If both answers are no β†’ defining. Only metabolism, cellular organisation and consciousness survive.

S2 Β· Name-format checking in one glance.

Correct = Genus species (capital, small, both italic/underlined separately). Any option with 'Species' capitalised or a joint underline is instantly wrong.

S3 Β· Ladder direction logic β€” no memory needed.

Lower = more alike (two lions). Higher = less alike (a fish and a man). Derive every up/down statement from this one picture instead of memorising.

S4 Β· Table 1's four organisms cover every hierarchy question.

Man, housefly, mango, wheat β€” learn those four columns and you can answer any "which family/order" match NEET pulls from this chapter.

8⚠️ Traps

T1 Β· "Growth is a defining property of life" β€” FALSE.

NCERT explicitly rejects it (mountains grow). Same for reproduction (mule). The three defining features are metabolism, cellular organisation, consciousness.

T2 Β· Genus is written with a capital, epithet never.

Mangifera Indica is wrong; mangifera indica is wrong; Mangifera indica βœ“.

T3 Β· Underline separately, not jointly.

The handwritten underline replaces italics and must break between the two words β€” a single continuous underline is a marked error.

T4 Β· Taxonomy β‰  systematics.

Systematics is the bigger word β€” it adds evolutionary relationships. Swapping the definitions is a favourite assertion-reason bait.

T5 Β· Category vs taxon.

"Family" is a category; "Solanaceae" is a taxon. A question calling Solanaceae a category (or family a taxon) is testing exactly this line.

T6 Β· Phylum for animals, Division for plants.

Mango's "phylum" does not exist β€” it has a Division (Angiospermae). Options mixing the two words across kingdoms are wrong.

T7 Β· Common characters DECREASE upward.

The most re-asked line. If the option says similarity increases from genus to kingdom, it is false.

T8 Β· Potato and brinjal share a GENUS, not just a family.

Both are Solanum (S. tuberosum, S. melongena). Lion and tiger likewise share genus Panthera. "Same family, different genus" options for these pairs are wrong.

T9 Β· Insecta is a CLASS, Diptera is an ORDER.

Housefly: Muscidae (family) β†’ Diptera (order) β†’ Insecta (class) β†’ Arthropoda (phylum). The middle two get swapped in options constantly.

T10 Β· Growth and reproduction are the same event only in unicellular organisms.

An amoeba dividing = growth in number AND reproduction. Extending this to multicellular organisms is false.
