- Defining (exclusive to life): metabolism Β· cellular organisation Β· consciousness (response to stimuli).
- Not defining (living things show them, but with exceptions or imitations): growth (mountains "grow"; also growth is external in non-living, internal in living) Β· reproduction (mules, sterile bees, infertile couples).
2 Β· Growth in living vs non-living
Living: from inside, by cell division; in plants continuous throughout life, in animals up to a certain age. Non-living: by accumulation on the surface. A dead organism does not grow.

Fungi spread by spores; Hydra buds; Planaria shows true regeneration (a fragment regrows the whole); fungi/algae fragments grow into new bodies; in unicellular organisms growth and reproduction are the same event (one cell divides = it grew in number = it reproduced).

Sum of ALL chemical reactions (making + breaking). Occurs in every living cell without exception. Isolated reactions in a test tube: living reactions, not living objects.

Category = the rank/rung (an abstract level: "family"). Taxon = the actual group placed at a rank ("Solanaceae"). All categories together = taxonomic hierarchy.

6π Visuals
V1 Β· The taxonomy ladder β similarity shrinks as you climb
Read the wedge: the box widens going down because lower taxa hold organisms that are more and more alike. NEET's favourite statement flips this β check the direction before answering.
V2 Β· Is it a defining feature of life? β the decision path
Left column: features with exceptions or non-living imitations. Right: the three that pass the test. Any NEET statement pairing "defining" with growth or reproduction is false.
7β‘ Shortcuts
Ask: can any non-living thing imitate it? Can any living thing lack it? If both answers are no β defining. Only metabolism, cellular organisation and consciousness survive.
Correct = Genus species (capital, small, both italic/underlined separately). Any option with 'Species' capitalised or a joint underline is instantly wrong.
Lower = more alike (two lions). Higher = less alike (a fish and a man). Derive every up/down statement from this one picture instead of memorising.
Man, housefly, mango, wheat β learn those four columns and you can answer any "which family/order" match NEET pulls from this chapter.
Plant families in this chapter end in -aceae (Solanaceae, Poaceae, Anacardiaceae); animal families end in -idae (Felidae, Canidae, Muscidae, Hominidae). Sorting options by suffix kills mislabeled ranks.
8β οΈ Traps
NCERT explicitly rejects it (mountains grow). Same for reproduction (mule). The three defining features are metabolism, cellular organisation, consciousness.
Mangifera Indica is wrong; mangifera indica is wrong; Mangifera indica β.
The handwritten underline replaces italics and must break between the two words β a single continuous underline is a marked error.
Systematics is the bigger word β it adds evolutionary relationships. Swapping the definitions is a favourite assertion-reason bait.
"Family" is a category; "Solanaceae" is a taxon. A question calling Solanaceae a category (or family a taxon) is testing exactly this line.
Mango's "phylum" does not exist β it has a Division (Angiospermae). Options mixing the two words across kingdoms are wrong.
The most re-asked line. If the option says similarity increases from genus to kingdom, it is false.
Both are Solanum (S. tuberosum, S. melongena). Lion and tiger likewise share genus Panthera. "Same family, different genus" options for these pairs are wrong.
Housefly: Muscidae (family) β Diptera (order) β Insecta (class) β Arthropoda (phylum). The middle two get swapped in options constantly.
An amoeba dividing = growth in number AND reproduction. Extending this to multicellular organisms is false.

Mules, sterile worker bees, infertile human couples β the NCERT trio that disqualifies reproduction as a defining feature.
Mountains, boulders, sand mounds β external accretion, not true growth.
Cell-free (in vitro) metabolic reactions in a test tube β living reactions, not living objects.
One process, two names, single-celled only.
All organisms sense surroundings; only humans are aware of themselves β the one asymmetry inside the "consciousness" feature.
NCERT's edge case: brain-dead patients on support machines never come back to normal life β quoted in statement questions about consciousness as the defining property.
Different classes (Dicot vs Monocot) but the same Division β a same-cell repeat inside Table 1 that catches column-memorisers.
